Why do Cats Sleep So Much and How do I Keep Them Comfortable?

Why do Cats Sleep So Much and How do I Keep Them Comfortable?

Cats sleep a whole lot, and it's not because they're lazy. It's in their nature.

The average house cat will sleep 13 to 15 hours, and older cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Studies show that cats can easily spend 70 percent of their lives sleeping.

The reason is that cats are crepuscular predators, which means that they will stalk and hunt prey at dawn and at dusk. That's why you will hear your cat running around the house at night, and it's sometimes the most active part of the day for them.

Adjusting a cat's body clock isn't that tough to do. In fact, if the cat is stimulated during daytime hours, and is playing with humans during the day, then chances are they will be less active at night.

Also, if cats are fed during the day they are more likely to spend more time awake in the daytime. Kittens, however, are typically nighttime animals and will get into a lot of trouble wandering around at night.

Don't let your cats get bored, and one of the ways to prevent them from being bored is getting them a unique Cat Toy or Cat Wand to stimulate your cat to play and be a bit more active during waking hours. It's more fun for you, too.

Cat sleep cycles last about 100 minutes, and a cat will be fully awake for a bit less than half an hour. Most of the sleep for a cat is light drowsy sleep and she is easily awakened. Two periods of about 10 minutes during this cycle has the cat in very deep sleep when it is very difficult to awaken your kitty. That's when the cat is experiencing rapid eye movement, and perhaps dreaming just like humans do.

However, be careful because cats can get bored and be under-stimulated and therefore lazy, and those cats may also seem to sleep more than is healthy for them. Make sure every cat has her share of active play and interaction to keep from getting temperamental.

Puzzles and games like some of them in our innovative interactive games section can also help to give mental stimulation to your kitty.

Find a very comfortable pillow or pad for your cat, and look into the best kind of cat house that you think your kitty would occupy.

You don't want to disrupt your cat's sleep pattern, because your cat may get a bit unpleasant, and you wouldn't want that to happen.
